Privacy

What I collect, why, who else handles it, how long I keep it, and the rights you have. If anything here is unclear, ask me and I'll answer.

Who I am

Precision Astrology is run by Ian Crocker, a sole trader based in Cornwall, England. I am the data controller for the personal data described here, which means I decide how it is used and I am responsible for it.

This policy covers precision-astrology.com, the app at app.precision-astrology.com, and the reader area at my.precision-astrology.com. The reader area and my inbox run on Ankorium, a platform I also operate, on the same UK server.

What I collect, and when

Using the free chart and calculators. You enter a birth date, a birth time (or say it's unknown) and a place. These are sent to my server to calculate the chart and are not stored there. Your browser remembers them on your own device so you don't have to type them again; you can clear them with the "Clear them" button. The place search is answered by a map search service (see below), so the place name you type goes to it.

Joining the reading waiting list. Your name, email address, what you're interested in, and anything you choose to write. No birth details. Joining also adds you to my mailing list, as the form says, so I can tell you when a place opens.

Requesting a reading. Your name, email address, which reading you want, anything you choose to write, and the birth details for the chart: date, time (if known), place, time zone and coordinates. You tick a box agreeing to send them. The patterns my software finds in the chart are recalculated and stored with the request.

Requesting a reading as a gift. The birth details are the other person's, and you also give me their name and email address, so that the reading can be delivered to them and not to you. When I deliver it I tell them it is a gift and point them to this policy, and they can ask me to delete the reading and their details.

Using the contact form. Your name, email address, what it's about, and your message. Writing to me does not sign you up to anything.

Subscribing to the newsletter. Your email address.

Asking for your signature sign write-up. Your email address, your first name if you give it, and which signature sign the calculator found. No birth details. Asking for it also adds you to my mailing list, as the form says.

Having a reading. Your reading is delivered as a private course in the reader area at my.precision-astrology.com. For that I keep your name and email address, a record of each sign-in, your progress through the course, and the questions you ask the reading's tutor with its answers.

Paying. Payment is taken by my payment provider. I receive your name, email address, what you bought, the amount and whether it succeeded. Your card details are entered on the payment provider's systems and never reach mine.

App accounts. New accounts on app.precision-astrology.com are closed. For existing accounts I keep the email address, name, a securely hashed password, saved charts (with their birth details), the readings and stories generated for them, and any conversations with the chart assistant.

Visiting the sites. I count visits with my own analytics, which records the page, the referring page, browser and operating system, screen width, the country worked out from your IP address, and any campaign tags in the link. It does not set cookies. Your IP address is not stored: it is turned into a code that changes every day, so a visit can be counted without following you from one day to the next. My web server's own logs do record IP addresses, to keep the service secure and working.

Emails I send. My email provider records whether an email I send was opened and which links were clicked.

Why I use it, and the legal basis

To prepare and deliver a reading you've asked for or bought, run your reader area and tutor, and take payment. Basis: taking steps at your request before a contract, and then performing it.
To use birth details for a reading. Basis: your explicit agreement, given with the tick box, and the contract. You can withdraw it (see your rights), though I then can't prepare the reading.
To handle a gift recipient's name, email address and birth details. Basis: legitimate interests, in delivering a reading that someone has chosen to give them. They are told about it when it is delivered, and can object or ask me to delete it.
To answer messages and enquiries. Basis: legitimate interests, in replying to you.
To send the newsletter and waiting-list emails. Basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link or by asking me.
To send account and service emails (sign-in codes, delivery of a reading, receipts). Basis: performing the contract.
To count visits and keep the sites secure. Basis: legitimate interests, in knowing what is used and keeping the service running safely.
To keep financial records. Basis: legal obligation (tax law).

How birth details are looked after

An exact birth time and place can help identify someone, so I treat them with care. In a reading request, the answers you give are stored encrypted. To prepare a reading I also need your name, email address and date of birth to hand, and the request arrives in my private inbox with the birth details so I can work from it; those copies are protected by the inbox's access controls rather than encrypted. Birth details are never published, never sold and never used for advertising.

To prepare a reading, the chart's geometry (planetary positions, aspects and patterns worked out from the birth details) is sent to an AI service, as described below, and the first draft is written from the geometry alone, without your name. When I assemble and send the finished reading, the same service helps with that, so it then handles the reading with your name on it.

I use a small number of service providers to run Precision Astrology. Each gets only what its job needs, and acts on my instructions. By type, they are:

Hosting: a UK hosting company runs the server where everything above is stored, with backups kept in the UK.
Website delivery and security: a network provider sits in front of the sites to deliver them and protect them from attack, so it sees your IP address and the pages you request.
Email: providers that send and receive my email, including the messages you send to [email protected], and that hold the mailing list for existing app account holders.
Payments: a card payment provider.
AI services: help me draft, assemble and send readings, answer the questions you ask a reading's tutor, and power the app's chart assistant, so what you type to the tutor or assistant is sent to them. Others generate some of the app's interpretation text, audio and images, and search my library; those receive chart geometry or library text, not your name or email address.
Map search: answers the birth-place search from your browser.
Fonts: the app loads its fonts from a font service, which sees your IP address when it does. (precision-astrology.com serves its own fonts.)

If you'd like to know which company provides any of these, ask me and I'll tell you.

I don't sell your data, share it for advertising, or let anyone else use it for their own purposes. I may disclose it if the law requires me to.

Data outside the UK

My server is in the UK. Several of the providers above, including the AI, email, payment and website delivery services, are based in, or process data in, the United States or elsewhere. Where personal data goes outside the UK, it is protected by the UK's adequacy arrangements (such as the UK–US data bridge, for providers certified to it) or by the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the standard contractual clauses in the provider's terms.

Cookies and storage on your device

precision-astrology.com sets no cookies. It stores the birth details you entered in your browser, only so the chart tools remember them; you can clear them at any time.
app.precision-astrology.com sets no cookies. It keeps your sign-in token and your preferences (such as where you are in a lesson) in your browser.
my.precision-astrology.com uses cookies only to keep you signed in, and keeps display preferences and unsent drafts in your browser. If you turn on notifications, it registers your device for them.

All of this is needed for the parts of the service you use. There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies, and my analytics doesn't use cookies at all, which is why there is no cookie banner.

How long I keep it

Reading requests, your reader area and tutor questions: for as long as your reading is available to you in the reader area, since they are what it runs on, or until you ask me to delete them.
Payment and invoice records: 6 years, as tax law requires.
Waiting-list enquiries and contact messages: 2 years after we were last in touch.
Newsletter and waiting-list mailing: until you unsubscribe. After that I keep only your address on a do-not-send list, so you aren't emailed again by mistake.
App accounts: until you delete the account, which you can do yourself from the account menu.
Visit counts: up to 2 years.
Server logs: about two months.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask me to:

See the personal data I hold about you, and get a copy of it.
Correct anything that's wrong.
Delete it. App account holders can delete their account themselves; for anything else, ask me.
Restrict how I use it, or object to my using it where the basis is legitimate interests.
Withdraw consent you've given, such as for the newsletter or for using birth details, at any time.
Move data you gave me to another service, in a common format.

Email [email protected] or use the contact page. It's free, and I'll reply within one month. I may need to check it's really you before handing anything over.

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. I'd rather you told me first so I can put it right.

Children

Precision Astrology is meant for adults. You must be 18 or over to request or buy a reading, and I don't knowingly collect data from children. If you think a child has sent me their details, tell me and I'll delete them.

Security

Everything is sent over encrypted connections. Passwords are stored hashed, the answers in reading requests are encrypted, and only I have access to the inbox and records. No system is perfectly secure, but if something went wrong that put your data at risk, I would tell you and the ICO as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

If I change how I use personal data, I'll update this page and its date. If a change matters to you, for example a new use of birth details, I'll tell you by email before it takes effect.
