What Are Exact Aspects in Astrology?

A practical guide to orbs, exact aspects, and why tight planetary connections can be useful when reading a birth chart.

Precision Astrology

If you have looked at a birth chart before, you have probably seen lines connecting planets. Those lines are aspects: angular relationships between planets and points in the chart.

An aspect can be broad or very tight. The tighter it is, the closer the planets are to the exact geometric angle.

Aspects: The Basics

The major aspects are based on specific angles:

AspectAngleCommon Theme
Conjunction0 degreesCombination, intensification
Opposition180 degreesPolarity, awareness
Trine120 degreesFlow, ease
Square90 degreesFriction, pressure
Sextile60 degreesOpportunity, support
Quincunx150 degreesAdjustment, mismatch

When someone says “Mars square Saturn”, they mean Mars and Saturn are close to 90 degrees apart in the zodiac.

What Is an Orb?

The orb is the distance from exact.

If Mars is at 15 degrees Aries and Saturn is at 15 degrees Capricorn, that square is exact. If Saturn is at 20 degrees Capricorn, the square has a 5 degree orb.

Both may be shown by chart software. The difference is precision.

Why Tight Aspects Stand Out

Many chart tools use generous orbs. That can be useful for a broad overview, but it can also create a long list of aspects without showing which ones are most specific.

Precision Astrology uses exactness as one signal. It highlights the tighter connections so you can see what may be most prominent before digging into the rest of the chart.

For example:

  • Jupiter at 5 degrees 50 minutes Virgo
  • Saturn at 5 degrees 50 minutes Scorpio

That is a sextile at 0 degrees 00 minutes orb: exact to the arcminute.

Compared with a 6 degree orb aspect, this is a much tighter connection. It does not mean the wider aspect is irrelevant, but it does mean the exact aspect deserves attention.

Exact Does Not Mean “Better”

This is important: exact aspects are not automatically good, bad, superior, or more spiritual.

They are simply more precise.

A tight square may feel demanding. A tight trine may feel natural. A tight quincunx may describe an ongoing adjustment. The meaning depends on the planets involved, the houses, signs, and wider chart context.

How the App Uses Exactness

The app uses orb precision to help organise the chart:

  1. Calculate planetary positions from your birth data
  2. Detect aspects and their exact orbs
  3. Highlight the tightest connections
  4. Check whether those aspects form larger configurations
  5. Use this as part of the chart signature and rarity model

That gives you a clearer starting point. Instead of scanning every possible aspect at once, you can begin with the strongest connections and then explore the rest of the chart around them.

The Practical Takeaway

Exact aspects are useful because they help prioritise.

They do not replace interpretation. They give interpretation a sharper starting point.

When you know which aspects are tightest, you can ask better questions: which planets are involved, which houses do they touch, and how do they connect to the rest of the chart?
